Olanna's Paper Sculptures

Students learn about the Alaskan Native artist Melvin Olanna. His stylized sculptures reflect his Inupiaq culture. Students create simple animal shapes from paper, using a paper scoring technique to make them look 3D. Paper sculptures are mounted on a background based on an Alaskan landscape.


Objectives and assessment criteria

Students will:

  1. learn about the importance of Inupiaq artist Melvin Olanna.
  2. understand that contour line is the outline of a form.
  3. use a paper scoring technique to create a 3D look to a piece of paper.
  4. create a setting for their chosen animal.
